The Conway School is pleased to welcome the school’s founder as our 2023 Commencement Speaker.

It is a delight to announce our commencement speaker each year. This year carries a unique gravity as the fiftieth commencement, and the graduation planning committee pondered accordingly. Like most things at Conway, the selection of a graduation speaker is a collaborative process, engaging students, staff, faculty, and even alums. We try to select an individual who represents a career path, vision, or perspective that is of importance to the new graduates soon to embark on their respective journeys into the fields of ecological design and planning. What can a speaker offer to them in the way of percipience?

Born on a Michigan farm, Conway founder Walter Cudnohufsky studied landscape architecture at Michigan State University and graduated with honors from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. His long professional practice in Canada and New England includes three decades teaching. Dissatisfied with traditional landscape architecture programs, he founded and for twenty years directed the Conway School of Landscape Design, now known as the Conway School.

As a landscape architect and planner, he has practiced at regional, municipal, institutional, and residential scales. He continues to teach, lecture, and write about planning and design, and was in the studio this week meeting with students about their projects.

Walt has maintained an incredibly supportive relationship with the school over the years, remaining engaged while allowing others to continue to curate its path. There is no one better suited to address Conway at its fiftieth commencement than someone who has seen it every step of the way. We’re excited to have him speak to the class of 2023, and look forward to hearing what he has to say.
