It is with great sadness that we learned of Toby Wolf’s passing this spring. Toby, Principal of Wolf Landscape Architecture, was a friend of the Conway School, serving as a project presentation reviewer, presenting on his work as a part of our speaker series, and being an external evaluator of our academic program. With his depth of knowledge, passion for ecology and the natural world, and kind personality, he was an ideal fit for these roles at Conway and we are grateful for the opportunities we had to learn from him.
We’ll always remember his description of the tulips and other bulbs moving up and down through the soil at the Boston Public Garden; how the meanders of the river inspired the planting plan for the lush bioswale at the Cornell Botanical Garden; how the nodding onion was designed to drift down the slope of the acclaimed accessible ramp at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He started his presentations with photographs of plants up close (ferns, wild ginger, red cedar), reminding us of the humble beauty and ecological functioning of the species that make up these incredible public spaces.
In addition to his professional practice, Toby also served on the board of the Ecological Landscape Alliance, a partner of the Conway School that supports the work of our alums and friends through continued education and convening practitioners. We will all continue to benefit from Toby’s contributions.
