The Belchertown State School was a defining attribute of Belchertown for over seventy years. When the school closed in 1992, its twenty-two buildings and campus fell into disrepair. A consortium of statkeholders tasked students Amanda Mackay and Andrew Kilduff with developing trail plans through the historic campus, provivding ooportunities for outdoor education for the public school system and open space for residents of a planned assisted-living facility. The student team developed recommendations for using an ecologically sensitive trail system to communicate the environmental and cultural history of the landscape to the public.
