Nina Shippen joined the Conway School board because she sees the enormous need in the public and private sectors for the kinds of approaches, knowledge, and skills that Conway aims to instill. For the last twenty years, Nina has been practicing ecologically-informed landscape design in western North Carolina. Since 2009, she has also been an instructor at the North Carolina Arboretum. A longtime admirer of Conway School, Nina became a trustee in 2023. She shares, “Conway offers a unique program in environmental planning and design that is sorely needed today. Their approach to delivering a rigorous curriculum within innovative parameters has proven successful for more than fifty years. Today’s world needs more Conways.” Nina’s backgrounds in health care and strategic planning (BSN: Columbia University School of Nursing; MBA: The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania) continue to inform her work today. A graduate of The Landscape Design and Landscape Design History program at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies, her current work incorporates the principles of both healing gardens and environmental stewardship.
